The project
Show Your Colours is based on the cross pollination and interaction between visual artists. The initiative comes from a Belgian artist Marjan Verhaeghe. The /1 edition of the project was shown in Wieze (2011, Space for actual art Villa de Olmen, Be), the /2 edition in Lausanne (2012, Musée Espace Arlaud, Ch), the /3 edition was presented in Assen (2015, SMAHK, Nl). Each time she invited some artists to join the project. Show Your Colours has now developed to an interaction between artists from Lithuania, Switzerland, The Netherlands , South Korea - The Netherlands, Great-Britain, Germany and Belgium.
There is an affinity between the participating artists, though they come from different countries, different socio-cultural backgrounds, vary in age and experience, work in different media.
In each edition the participants got to know each other during a first meeting. They joined the project to discuss and share in a confidential way ideas, concepts and process.
The artists meet a few times on location. The rest of the action is virtual and takes place in their own studios. Via (private) blog, mail & skype we keep contact.
Show Your Colours is the theme. The intention is that the participating artists inspire each other while discussing this sentence. In order to find new points of view in their usual way of thinking and working, to deepen their proper artistic ways, to create new work. During the last phase all artists gather on location to find the best location and presentation for each work. This way both, the individual works and the exhibition itself, will benefit.
Confrontation with the public is important. An exhibition has an extra value one can’t get in virtual galleries: the tactile, visible, measurable aspect. Therefore it’s important to find a right presentation location: the exhibition is not only about the works shown, but also about the concept behind it.
On one hand this way of working offers the participants "tools" to create interesting works, strong in form and content, with a renewing or strengthening aspect in their own oeuvre.
On the other hand there is the intention to generate communication. Interest in the story of the other artists, their background and their way of working, is the base of a cooperation with an international value.
The project is defined by its length and caracterized by enthusiasm.

SYC/3 in progress
A
while ago Dutch artist Wilma Vissers (whom I only knew via a mutual friend)
mailed me about an exhibition she curated. I replied and told her about the
project Show Your Colours. We talked a while about the concept and
possibilities. And from that point on there was an opportunity to launch SYC/3
in The Netherlands. Wilma contacted some artists she knows and invited them to
participate in the project. Again artists with different cultural backgrounds
and ages, working in different media. They didn't know each other.
We
met for the first time in SMAHK, Assen: got introduced to each other, talked
with the museum staff, discussed the time schedule of the project. All invited
artists accepted the invitation and went home, inspired by the offered
challenge to cooperate in this project.
So
all artists are working in their own studio now,
keeping contact i.e. exchanging ideas, discussing concepts etc via private blog
and mail....

PROJET SYC/2
Le projet
SHOW YOUR COLOURS est basé sur une collaboration internationale avec des artistes de Lituanie, de Suisse, des Pays-Bas et de Belgique. Des contactes qui proviennent de mes coopérations nationales et internationales. Ils ne se connaissaient pas.
En 2010, Les artistes sont invités à participer à un workshop virtuel. Via un blog (privé) et le mail, nous avons échangés des idées et des pensées; chaque entrée a été questionnée, repensée et stimulée. Je leur ai donné des impulsions. Grâce au partage de toutes les idées, chacun pouvait développer une idée innovante pour une nouvelle œuvre sans penser uniquement à son propre medium ou à une éventuelle faisabilité. Un des buts de ce projet est de trouver un concept, qui est en même temps reconnaissable et en même temps nouveau sur le plan technique, thématique, plastique. Au moment où chacun s’est retiré dans son atelier afin d’ élaborer son propre concept, le contact virtuel s’ est concentré sur l’échange des progressions.
La confrontation avec le public est importante. La présentation réelle a une valeur spécifique qu’on ne peut pas trouver dans le virtuel: le tangible, le visible, la relation réelle.
La présentation d’un tel projet demande une location spécifique qui donne aussi valeur aux intentions du groupe et aux recherches des artistes.
Le but de ce projet est duel. D’ une part, il offre des ‘outils’ aux participants pour développer des créations intéressantes et en même temps innovantes / puissantes dans leur propre langage artistique. D’autre part, le projet offre la possibilité de créer des liens entre des artistes que je respecte et qui viennent de différents pays, sont d’ âges différents et pratiquent des disciplines différentes.
Le temps et un enthousiasme constant ont amené le projet à être présenté dans un lieu dédié à l’art contemporain.
Novembre 2011. VILLA DE OLMEN, ESPACE POUR L’ART CONTEMPORAIN, nous invitait et nous donnait carte blanche pour présenter les œuvres dans son bâtiment classé. Tous les artistes sont venus pour apporter une attention particulière à la dernière étape du projet: la présentation. C’est à ce moment là qu’ ils se sont rencontrés pour la première fois.
En 2012. VISARTE.VAUD invite le projet à Lausanne. Un deuxième volet de ce projet se déroule alors de la même façon avec des artistes suisses. Pour l’ intervention dans l’ESPACE ARLAUD, nous avons opté pour une nouvelle présentation mêlant les créations des deux groupes afin d’obtenir une identité forte et unie.

PROJECT SYC/1
Het project
Show Your Colours is gebaseerd op een internationale interactie tussen kunstenaars uit Litouwen, Zwitserland, Nederland en België. Ik leerde hen kennen dankzij samenwerkingen in België of tijdens mijn verblijven in het buitenland; zij kenden elkaar niet.
De kunstenaars werden in 2010 via email uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan een virtuele workshop. Via (private) blog en mail werden denkbeelden en gedachten uitgewisseld. Alle input werd bevraagd en herdacht. Mijn bijdrage bestond erin om de creativiteit van de deelnemers af en toe te verleiden door impulsen op de blog te zetten en door op Socratische wijze te bevragen. De bedoeling was dat de kunstenaars dieper zouden ingaan op het eigen artistiek parcours of een nieuwe invalshoek zouden vinden in de gebruikelijke manier van denken en werken.
Na de periode van samenwerken via internet, ontwikkelden de deelnemende kunstenaars hun idee verder tot een boeiend concept en uiteindelijk tot een nieuw werk met een weloverwogen presentatie.
Als laatste fase van dit project worden de nieuwe werken gepresenteerd. Interactie met publiek is belangrijk. Een concrete tentoonstelling heeft een extra waarde die je via internet niet kan aanbieden: het tastbare, zichtbare, meetbare aspect. Het vinden van een juiste plek luistert dan ook nauw; zowel de werken als de achterliggende samenwerking moeten belicht worden.
Enerzijds wilde ik door deze manier van werken ‘handvatten’ aanreiken om tot interessante werken te komen die zowel inhoudelijk als vormelijk sterk zijn en een vernieuwend/ versterkend aspect inhouden binnen het eigen oeuvre. Anderzijds wilde ik graag communicatie tot stand brengen. Een interesse in de werkwijze en in het verhaal van kunstenaars met een andere achtergrond en werkzaam in een ander medium is de basis voor een samenwerking die internationaal ook iets te betekenen heeft. De tijd en het niet aflatende enthousiasme hebben het project gestuwd.
November 2011. Villa De Olmen, ruimte voor actuele kunst, toonde meteen interesse in het project en nodigde ons uit. We kregen carte blanche om de werken op te stellen in de boeiende ruimtes van het geklasseerd monument. Alle kunstenaars werden uitgenodigd om over te komen en samen de juiste plek voor elk werk te bepalen. De kunstenaars ontmoeten elkaar voor het eerst in realiteit tijdens de opstelling van de werken. Samen zochten we naar de juiste plek en voldoende ademruimte voor elk werk.

The project

In 2010 the artists were invited to participate in a virtual workshop. Via (private) blog and mail we exchanged ideas and thoughts; each input has been questioned, rethought and teased. My input was to seduce the creativity every now and then by putting some items on the blog and by questioning the Socrates’ way. The idea behind this interaction is to get deeper into one’s own artistic work or to find another angle in one’s way of working and perception.
After this phase of working via internet, each artist was asked to create a new work along with a well thought presentation, connected to his/her existing works and yet innovative.
Interaction with a public is important. An effective presentation has a surplus value you can’t get via the web: the touchable, visible, measurable aspect. It’s important to find the right place to present these new works.; for the artists as well as for the public. They need a specific setting to throw light on the value of this project and the results.
The goal of this project is double.
On the one hand it offers the participants ‘tools’ that help them to develop interesting creations concerning content and form and yet innovative/ strengthening in their own way of creating. On the other hand it’s an opportunity to create contacts between artists I like to work with.
Interest in artists with different backgrounds and working in different media is the base for an interesting international cooperation. Time and our never ceasing enthusiasm pushed the project to these results.
